Being obese is the serious concern for the Americans as more than 66% of the Americans are classed as obese. But, there is nothing to fret as the recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, showed that the consumption of certain vegetables and fruits can help you to control your body weight.

Being overweight or obese is the serious risk to the life which causes chronic diseases. Recent change in lifestyle helps people to consume extra energy in their diet which change it to the extra weight and extra chronic diseases. But, if you follow the proper diet and exercise regularly, you can maintain your body weight and fat successfully.

The 2010 dietary Guidelines for Americans which was issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), recommended that consuming certain fruits and vegetables can help you to lower the chronic diseases and it will help children and adults to control and maintain their body weight.

Dr. Monica Bertoia noted that there is strong evidence that these fruits and vegetables can help to prevent cardiovascular diseases, but there is no strong evidence whether they help to lower the body weight.

Dr. Bertoia’s team has proved that consuming fruits and vegetables with a lower glycemic load and higher fibre content can help you to have a healthy weight than consuming the food which has higher glycemic load and lower fibre content.

1More than 70 Vegetables and Fruits were surveyed

Almost more than 100,000 of Americans men and women participated in this survey and they works in health profession in order to survey these fruits and vegetables. These participants had no history of any kind of chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Although, the adjustments were made when they had any kind of chronic diseases during this survey.

These participants self reported about the weight loss and filled the questionnaires in the 4 year interval for 24 years from 1986 to 2010. Fruits and vegetables with same nutritional value were combined and the questions were asked in the questionnaires about the frequency of the nutritional value of such fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables were classified with the low or high fiber and high or low GL, which was multiplied with the carbohydrate content of each fruits/vegetables by the glycemic index of that respective fruit/vegetable.

Vegetables were categorized into green leafy, cruciferous, and legumes and fruits in melon, citrus, and berry according to the same nutritional content. And, only whole fruits were included juice were not added as they have sugar. Also, fried potatoes were not included and unprocessed potatoes were included.

Also, adjustments were made according to the lifestyle changes from person to person which includes smoking, sitting for hours, sleeping on time, watching TV, and consuming alcohol.
